Weekly Update 10-4-07: Donations, Site Updates, and More

Well, it’s been a glorious week for the Cairo Development Team. We updated our website with new gradients, a few developmental images, and a slew of miscellaneous tweaks. It’s amazing how many small changes we’ve made to the site since the new redesign opened a few weeks back. Consider them small reminders of our dedication to this project.

In other news, we have been making progress, slowly but surely, with the coding of the shell. Consider us like an M&M’s factory. You never actually see the manufacturing process of those little chocolate treats, but you know it’s always going on. Same goes for Cairo.

Additionally, we now have a new donations page. Feel free to give us any spare change you might have laying around and don’t forget to cash in those savings bonds that have been sitting in your drawer for years! Joking aside, we are accepting donations in any amount. Remember no gift is too small. One month it might help us pay the web host and another it might help us with some R&D. We have tried to place the donation links in places that will get noticed but aren’t in your face. We understand that you all come here to support us and that is thanks enough, but should you decide you want to generously donate some of your hard earned money, we would be much obliged.

That is all for now. I hope you enjoyed this update. From now on I’m going to end each update with an interesting factoid so even if the post isn’t one of your favorites, you can at least say you learned something.

Factoid: The average number of people that are airborne over the US in any given hour is 61,000.

EDIT: We have now had over 10,000 unique visitors to the site, comprising an average of 10,000 visits per month. Thanks for the support everyone!

Weekly Update 9-27-07

I want to take the time to thank those people who come to our site daily to check out what’s going on. I want to thank those people who DON’T visit regularly, but still support us all the way.

I was posting in our forum about a development timeline, and unfortunately I do not have one readily available. I know it’s a disappointment to feel like the project is dragging, but we don’t want to put out an alpha or a beta and then have people base the promise of Cairo on incomplete software. When we deliver something, we want to know it represents the quality and distinction that we have promised for our shell. We want to make sure that our ideas will not be taken and our efforts wasted.

This week has been a slow week for myself with family, work, et-cetera, and I’m sure the rest of the team has had their own responsibilities to tend with. I am aiming to release some new concept shots, downloads, and more in the coming weeks as soon as I can. We are a busy team: bear with us and we will not disappoint.

Thanks for stopping by,

-Cairo Team

Accepting Applications

We are looking for developers who have experience with C#. Other languages are a plus!
We are looking for designers who have experience or skill with interface design.

We need committed individuals who have the spare time to work on a project that encompasses a variety of computing areas; we need people who leave their ego at the door and can work well in a team.If you don’t have the time to dedicate or the commitment to participate do not apply.

Submit your applications to cairoteam [at] cairoshell.com. Note: Applications submitted as comments will be ignored.

Developers end OMGWTFBBQ; Post status update.

The developers have been working hard to finish the plugin system and desktop which will become the heart of Cairo. From there, development will begin on the new explorer and a list of desktop-enhancing plugins. Work will also begin on creating a simple, accessible, and easy to use system for accessing the entire Cairo system. Plugins in the Cairo system will be easily toggled on and off, a breeze to configure to your liking, and easy to maintain and update. These will include a “Start’ replacement, Desktop switching, Application grouping, and other goodies. Once these are complete, an alpha build MAY be released. However, we haven’t decide which route to take as this could either help us or hurt us.

Furthermore, development will speed up for advertising including banners, wallpapers, finalized concept shots, logos, et-cetera. With our website complete and no other big projects to slow us down, it’s time to get serious. Sadly, our BBQ parties are now over. Just a reminder, if you have any downloads you’d like to submit to see if we include it when our downloads page launches, feel free to send it to cairoteam [at] cairoshell.com.

With this news, I hope to begin posting regular updates and keep the community informed on our progress. We know it’s been tough to stick it out, but really, I know I speak for the entire team when I say “Thank you.” We are here for all of you, just as we hope you are here for us.

As always, best wishes,
-Cairo Team

New Website Launch; Developers have OMGWTFBBQ Party

Welcome to our newly re-designed website!

In the coming weeks you will notice a few tweaks here and there, but the most noticeable additions will be the inclusion of our new downloads page and the detailed pages for each feature. It’s worth noting that the downloads page is fully functional, but currently lacks enough downloads to be worth adding. If you have any downloads you’d like to submit to see if they are featured on the site, we want to hear from you. Downloads can include wallpapers, icons, banners, PSD files, logos, etc.

Additionally, you will find our new forum design. Please report all bugs and comments (for the rest of the site as well) ASAP. If you enjoy our site as much as we do (and hope you do) share the forums with your friends so we can really create a wonderful community.

As always, thanks for the support.
