Throughout the development process we will be releasing milestones, alphas, betas, and release candidates—milestones marking the furthest from completion and release candidate the closest.
The UI in this image represents a Milestone 1 UI, meaning that we have begun taking all of our UI work and consolidating it towards a final interface. Like Microsoft or Apple, this UI may evolve substantially over the course of its development.
The alpha available soon will be a Milestone 1 release, meaning it will mark the first leap towards getting Cairo out into the world. The UI milestones are not necessarily going to coincide with the release milestones.
Questions, comments, criticisms welcome.

hi this looks really nice, kind of macish
however, i was wondering if cairo will be multiplatform in the future? similar to that of KDE4 that is being ported from linux to windows.
i would love to run cairo in linux, even if it needs WINE (windows api and library for linux) to run.
Also, if you port native to linux, you would get much contributors.
Thanks and best wishes with your proyect.

Unfortunately, we are a closed source project and are developing Cairo for Windows only.

How does one become a beta/alpha tester?

But how will it handle wonderful open source programs such as firefox and pidgin?
Michael

@knightinarms: We will have a signup for the initial testing, then release it to the whole community.
@cdsboy: Windows runs Firefox and Pidgin, so Cairo will as well =)

This is very nice. Well done so far. Is Cairo a part of Microsoft’s technologies? I remember hearing something about Windows Cairo, but I’m not sure.
Is this going to in Windows 7? And if is isn’t, it should.

Cairo was an old Codename for a Microsoft project that fell through. However we are independent developers who just happen to pick the same name.

Looks sweet, can’t wait for the alpha!
Will it have a Desktop-Rightclik Menu such as Blackbox (bb4win) has?
Michael

Yes, we will have contextual menus.

I love the look of this interface. It’s clean, well organized and sleek
I also think the ‘pages’ thing instead of a scrollbar is a good idea, however it remains to be seen how well this works with, say, hunderds of files in 1 folder.
Question: will the interface be rendered in 3D (like Aero)?
Henry

“Yes, we will have contextual menus.”
Oh, that’s great!

is there a classic appearance for the environment or will the user be required to have Aero Glass enabled for the UI to work?
Michael

ikyoucrow–we will be using DWM, so I’m assuming the answer is yes, but it’s my educated guess at the moment until I get an answer from one of our dev’s.
